OUR STORY

We live on my husband’s great Grandfather’s land that was purchased some time in 1893. Originally there were 5000 acres and it was passed down to 3 generations. Frank Cheatham Reid moved to Texas from Alabama and fell in love with a young woman Augusta Stulting, born and raised in Gonzales TX. They purchased land out off the Shiner Highway (Alt. 90) and lived on the land and farmed. Gussie decided one day that she wanted to live in town (9 miles away) and Cheat Reid made that happen. They moved to town and he sold all of the land in the country save approximately 2000 acres. That land was passed down to their 6 children and then to their children. Today heirs of 4 of those original children still own their Great Grandfathers land. We inherited 45 acres and have access to another 350 acres that we lease from family. We are a small cattle ranch and have about 30 head of cattle. We have 6 children and 18 Grandchildren which I call my Grin-Kids and they are why the Bunkhouse came to be. We built our home and retired here and love hosting our crew at the Big D Ranch.

WHO WE ARE

Reid and I decided to move to country in the late 1990’s. He was a Logistics Auditor for a chemical company and I was a Legal Assistant for a small law office, both in Houston. We found a builder who would build cabins on your property. His crew showed in Jan of 1999 and built our 1 bedroom lofted cabin on our hill. 5 years later we started another remodel and completed our Yellow house on the Hill. In 2006 we added a barn for our cattle ranch. My husband was thrilled. But our children began to marry and have children and in 2013 we found that we needed to transform the Barn into a Bunkhouse for when our crew came to visit. We started the remodel of the barn and 18 months later it was transformed into the Big D Ranch Bunkhouse. Our family is now 32 of us and we fill up the Yellow House on the Hill and the Bunkhouse several times a year. We are making memories and laughter every year of our lives. We hope you make a few memories yourself, when you visit our Ranch.
